Dr. Chris Worrall - Principal Project Leader – Adhesives, Composites and Sealants

Dr. Chris Worrall

Principal Project Leader – Adhesives, Composites and Sealants

Chris Worrall is a principal project leader responsible for composites joining, manufacture, processing and testing. He is a metallurgy and materials science graduate, with a PhD in the impact of composite sandwich materials. Chris has spent ten years in Japan working in the automotive, aerospace, renewable energy and rail transport industries.

Before leaving the UK, he worked in a research laboratory on the processing of novel thermoplastic composite materials, improving the toughness of composites, and developing test methods for composite materials. His 30 years of composites experience covers composite-to-metal joining, dielectric characterisation, mechanical testing of composite materials, finite element analysis, design of composite structures, and manufacturing technology for composite materials. He successfully led TWI’s technical, exploitation and dissemination activities in the FP7 FibreChain project, which won a JEC innovation award. Chris is part of the Surflow™ team at TWI that recently won the Composites UK Innovation award.

Lead Failure Investigator (non-metallic) - Polymer & Composite Technologies Group

Dr Farshad Salamat-Zadeh is a Chartered Polymer and Adhesive Engineer, with 21 years of consultancy and project management experience. Dealing with material selection, joining and manufacturing issues related to automotive, transport, defence, aerospace, medical, oil and gas, and other industrial market sectors.

Holder of a BSc honours (2:1) degree in Polymer Engineering, MSc in Advanced Manufacturing Systems and PhD in Joining Technology. Dr Salamat-Zadeh has hands on experience with polymer processing, production engineering, relevant joining and plastic welding processes, as well as composite fabrication and applications of adhesives, sealants, coatings, and associated surface treatments. Dr Salamat-Zadeh is TWI’s expert in failure investigation of polymers, adhesives, coatings and GRP/CFRP materials.

Senior Project Leader, ACA

An automotive engineer by degree, which developed into a specialism into adhesives and joining through post-grad work at both Oxford Brookes and Cranfield Universities. Armed with an MPhil from Oxford Brookes, Stuart joined GKN Aerospace and used these skills to solve adhesion problems and develop new product solutions for aircraft ice protection systems. The last five years of his time were spent preparing a new thermoplastic system for flight test.

Dr James Smith - DefenceManager

James Smith is TWI’s Defence Manager with a broad remit to ensure TWI’s defence members realise the full value of their membership. This includes facilitating interactions with TWI’s technology groups and representing TWI at The UK Government level. After spending nearly 5 years leading Rolls-Royce’s zirconium corrosion activities, James knows first-hand the key drivers for TWI’s defence members. Since joining TWI in early 2019 James has seen a 50% plus increase in defence member projects undertaken at TWI.

James holds a PhD from The University of Manchester in zirconium corrosion and a Masters in Chemistry from The University of Sheffield. Away from work, James can regularly be found on the golf course or rowing boats in Cambridge.
