Specialist, publicly funded project service for TWI Members

Mon, 20 January, 2020

Developing an innovative technology and defining the strategy to take it to market are at the core of a successful business but, in reality, it can sometimes be a challenge to find sufficient time for R&D and the cost of such activities can be prohibitive.

However, did you know that leveraging public funding is a key tool already used by many TWI Members to enable strategic R&D?  Utilising public funding reduces the risks associated with using internal funds by lowering the business’s direct costs and supplementing their R&D budget with in-kind contribution from partners.  Specialist expertise and experience is required to access the range of public funding available, in particular in concept development and proposal preparation.

If you have a novel technology or strategic R&D objective you would like to explore further with the support of grant funding, then TWI’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) team is here to assist - dedicated personnel whose role is to secure publicly funded projects in engineering research and development.  TIM works closely with TWI’s technical experts, Innovation Centres and the wider TWI Innovation Network to develop concepts, build reputable consortiums and produce high quality proposals.

The team’s knowledge base, capabilities and experience cover all elements of the proposal generation process including: identifying suitable funding opportunities; concept development; consortium building; proposal writing; and financial management.  The TIM team liaises extensively with a broad range of potential partners from the UK and overseas representing industry, research and academia.  Funding is typically won from national and international funding agencies such as Horizon 2020, Innovate UK, Clean Sky, Eureka and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Dr Steve Shi, TWI Director of Industrial Members, said “TWI is governed by its Members, for its Members and provides them with expert advice and solutions directly focused on assisting their business.  Access to collaborative and public funding will enable Members to work with TWI and other partners to develop new technologies, and address the long-term challenges in Members’ businesses.”

Professor Tat-Hean Gan, TWI Director of Innovation and Skills, explained “TWI Members can be confident that our track record in technology innovation management speaks for itself if they are interested in this service and advancing their technologies.  Since 2008, the TIM team has been instrumental in securing around 360 funded projects, to the value of around £412 million for the partners involved.
