TWI and Sabanci University, Turkey to form innovation centre

Mon, 07 October, 2019

TWI and Sabanci University have signed an agreement to extend collaborations on innovation and skills, and build up a strong European portfolio together.

Prof Tat-Hean Gan and Dr. Cem Selcuk from the TWI Innovation Network (TWIIN) attended the signing ceremony at the HQ of Sabanci University's integrated manufacturing centre with Kordsa, one of Sabanci Holding companies, on Thursday 26th September 2019.

The European innovation centre activities will focus on multinational programmes of projects with TWI Hellas to develop new technologies and support Sabanci University’s ambitions in developing a joint research portfolio in Europe.

Technology activities will be centred around integrated manufacturing for manufacturing excellence, with related platforms such as additive manufacturing (AM) for metals and composites, 3D printing of structures from prototype to large scale, and nanotechnology aligning with the unique setting of the Sabanci University in Istanbul, Turkey.

The collaboration will complement Sabanci University's capabilities with TWI's collaborative skills and strong European presence through TWI Hellas. Using technology innovation management approaches and novel techniques against bench marking, TWI Hellas will work with Sabanci University to determine how integrated manufacturing can be enhanced and adapted to production technologies, with ambitions of industrial scale up for successful deployment and sustainable impact.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning engines will be applied to detect asset anomalies, which can help predict and prevent problems before they happen, and asset-centric visualisations will be leveraged to help end-users understand how they can improve financial outcomes for the benefit of their business.

Prof Gan said that "the new European initiative is a milestone in this unique relationship that goes back many years”.

Dr. Selcuk added that "this new venture will no doubt build upon the long term collaborative relationship between our two organisations and it will be a tremendous success as a result”.
