TWI Consultant Engineer Recognised for Pressure Systems Work

Thu, 11 July, 2019

We are pleased to announce that TWI Consultant Engineer, John Wintle has been jointly awarded the 2018 Donald Julius Groen Award for his work on pressure systems.

The award, which is conferred annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), is shared with Paul Jackson of ABB, with whom John has worked closely over many years.

John Wintle is a long serving member and former Chair of the IMechE Pressure Systems Group, as well as having been Chairman the European Pressure Equipment Research Council. He currently chairs the UK Users Group for the French nuclear code RCC-M being used to design equipment for the nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point C. John is an authority on the European Pressure Equipment Directive and has developed courses for TWI Industrial Members on this topic.

The IMechE award comes in recognition of John’s dedicated work on ageing plant, including HSE’s landmark Research Report 509 (written alongside TWI’s R&D Manager Philippa Moore) on Plant Ageing – management of equipment containing hazardous fluids or pressure. John has also written extensively on life extension of offshore installations for the Energy Institute (EI), and has just completed guidance on fatigue life of ageing pressure vessels, which EI is due to publish later this year.

John, who has significant experience in the fields of health and safety, codes and standards, and risk-based inspection, particularly in the nuclear sector, is due to receive his award at a ceremony in December.
